In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. I Thessalonians 5:18

A lack of thanksgiving pollutes the social environment. No one can escape the impact of living in the company of unthankful people any more than one can escape the effects of dirty air and water.  A lack of thanksgiving destroys healthy relationships.

If we are sensitive to thanksgiving we can feel its absence the minute we enter an environment where it does not exist in abundance. We can also instantly perceive it’s  abundant presence!

As sure as we can become very sensitive to the quality of air we breathe and the water we drink, so, too, we can and should become sensitive to the quality of thanksgiving that surrounds us.  The absence of thanksgiving is deadly to the quality of human life.  Humans were created to be thankful. Thankfulness is to the quality of relationships what clean water and air are to healthy bodies.

On a more personal level, ask yourself if you would rather live in a home with deeply thankful people or with people who express no gratitude for anything or anyone? Be honest. Thankful people make any environment where they live a better place  and we all know this.

Christian thankfulness is an intimate, heightened awareness that there are good things coming to us at every moment because God is good to us in Christ.  Christian thankfulness is the ability to perceive and thankfully receive these good things in Christ in every situation we face. The continuous awareness of Christ in me allows me to overcome the absence of good things that are not coming to me that should be coming to me in this fallen, unthankful world.  Christian thankfulness is like have a constant internal supply of clean water and air in an otherwise polluted world.

When a person is unable to see anything coming to them for which they are thankful, they are on on the brink of despair and their behavior will follow their despair into depression and destructive actions.  Much of the destructive relational behavior we see in society is rooted in a lack of thanksgiving.

It is the will of God that I be thankful in Christ because I was not created for despair, depression or destruction. I was created to receive love, to rejoice and to release love. Jesus in me is the presence of the new creation where thanksgiving is a natural part of being human.

Thanksgiving was not created for man. Man was created for Thanksgiving
