“Blessed are the poor in Spirit for theirs is the kingdom of God.” – Matthew 5:3
Poverty limits one’s options. To be truly poor one is forced to stay focused on living one day at a time with resources that may not make it to the end of that day. The truly poor’s only option is today.
Poverty of Spirit is also being limited to one daily option. it is to live one day at a time limited to God as our single option.
Jesus lived the perfect life of sacrifice and love by limiting His options to His Father’s love and will. Jesus’ poverty of Spirit allowed Him to live unlimited love and life and overcome the world for us.
Shortly after Jesus’ baptism when the heaven’s opened, the Spirit came over Jesus and the Father declared in a loud voice Jesus was His beloved Son, Jesus was sent by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted. His temptation would be to multiply his options by choosing other things beyond His Father’s love and will.
Satan came with multiple tempting options. Jesus rejected them all. Jesus’ tenacious insistence that God is enough is poverty of Spirit. This poverty of spirit is the mark of the life of the coming Kingdom.
The Kingdom is a one option reality given to those who choose Jesus and in so doing choose the singular love and life of God.
Poverty of Spirit is the blessed life of choosing the one unlimited option of the Father’s love and will. Jesus chose it for us so we could choose it with Him.
God’s love and will expressed by Jesus and carried by the Spirit is the only thing we truly need. “Fear not little flock. It is the Father’s will to give you the Kingdom.”
