The Last Adam and the Last Eve
“The first man Adam became a living being.” The last Adam became a life-giving spirit. However, the spiritual is not first, but the natural, and afterward the spiritual. The first man was of the earth, made of dust; the second Man is the Lord from heaven. As was the man of dust, so also are those who are made of dust; and as is the heavenly Man, so also are those who are heavenly. And as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly Man. – I Corinthians 15:45-49
Jesus is called the “last Adam”. In other words, Jesus is the last hope for humanity. If Jesus had failed to get being human right, there would be no third Adam.
The first Adam set the stage for the life and work of the last Adam. Jesus, the last Adam, put humanity back into eternal life and connection with the Father. Most Christians have a pretty clear understanding of the relationship between the failure of the first Adam and the success of the last Adam. What we often miss is the birth of the Last Eve.
The first Eve was taken from the first Adam’s side as he slept. The Last Eve was taken from Jesus’ side as he died awake on Calvary. We, the church, are the last Eve taken from the open and bleeding side of the last Adam.
For all of eternity we will walk as bone of Jesus’ bones and flesh of Jesus’ flesh. As one with the last Adam we will deliver the Father’s love. All who see us in the company of Jesus will remember His suffering at Calvary and the miracle of the last Adam’s love for us.
It was not good for the first Adam to be alone. Thank God it was not good for the last Adam to be alone and without us.
